When realtors talk about resales, they often say that updated kitchens sell homes.

When I think about the heart of a home, it’s always the kitchen.  It’s where the most important conversations take place. In our home, our family gathers around the kitchen table to exchange ideas, opinions, news and for “show and tell” about accomplishments – whether it’s mealtime or not.

And speaking of meals, the kitchen is where I do some of my best work.  That might sound odd, but when I have complex issues that need to be resolved, I retreat to the kitchen and transform from a busy entrepreneur architect to a home chef.  Cooking fuels creativity in me.  It’s as if constructing new dishes is a therapeutic experience that helps me see solutions to the problems that brought me there. I love kitchens.

Here are my top 5 ways to revamp your kitchen.

  1. Open up the kitchen to the family, living, dining or outdoor areas to create a more palatial environment. Removing obstacles like walls and doors and bringing in more natural light via skylights and bigger windows can make the area appear more spacious. Additional options include using recessed or indirect lighting and bring the outdoors inside with plants, flowers, and dwarf trees which can thrive indoors.
  2. Use a kitchen island or peninsula to connect with family while preparing meals. These built-in features make great work surfaces, and play surfaces for young children.
  3. Use of neutral colors and materials in larger format (such as tiles) to make the kitchen feel bigger, minimal and clean.
  4. To add more depth to the kitchen and make it look larger, use transparent glass on cabinet fronts or just use shelves instead of cabinets, and use color in your backsplash. Hint of color and pattern in a backsplash can invigorate a monochromatic kitchen!
  5. Modern, soft-closing, minimalist hardware makes opening and closing of drawers and cabinets easy. What’s more the minimalist design dramatically reduces the visual clutter in the kitchen for a fresh, tidy look.
